How Jos Antens works: on the spot, with the camera running

Jos Antens prefers to paint outdoors, at the place itself. His work descriptions often simply say so: Londen Tower Bridge was “painted on the spot (en plein air)”, and with Matterhorn en plein air he writes: “painted on the spot, see video”.

Painting outdoors means working with the light of that moment. With heidelandschap binnen een uur (heathland within an hour) he noted: “the sun is setting, so quickly”.

He films many paintings as they come into being. Of his works from 2023 to now, 230 have a film; on this site it is shown with the work, below the photo. More films are on his YouTube channel.

Not every painting is made in one go. Behind the former V&D department store in Roosendaal a small yellow house came to light when the store was demolished. With het gele huisje (the yellow house) he writes: “in the film you see me make the sketch on which I based this oil painting.”
