About

Jos Antens
Roosendaal, Netherlands

Jos Antens paints what he sees: the harbour of Bristol, a square in Antwerp, the Matterhorn in winter, the market in Vlaardingen, the streets of Roosendaal. Preferably outdoors, with the easel in the street or by the sea, in oil on panel or in watercolour. Light is the subject; the building or the boat is the occasion.

He films many paintings while they come into being. Those films are shown with the works, so you can see how a painting goes from first stroke to last touch in a few hours.

From airbrush to oil paint

Jos has been drawing since childhood: first in airbrush, later in watercolour and in recent years mostly in oil. After secondary school he hesitated between becoming an art teacher or a PE teacher and first chose the academy of physical education in Tilburg. He worked for seven years as a sports instructor with the Dutch Commando Corps in Roosendaal, meanwhile training as a professional photographer and taking evening classes at St. Joost in Breda.

Later he fulfilled his childhood wish after all: in 2005 he graduated as an art teacher from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. He teaches drawing, painting and visual arts at the Markland College in Oudenbosch.

Exhibitions and awards

Since 2008 Jos has been a member of the Aquarel Instituut België, with which he exhibited several times in Mol and Antwerp. His work has been shown at the Tongerloohuys, the Paterskerk and Jan Snel in Roosendaal, the church of Rucphen and Galerie de Blauwe Horizon in Vlissingen, among others. In 2025 he painted in England with Peter Brown (Pete the Street); in 2026 he won the plein air competition in Vlaardingen and donated the winning work to Museum Vlaardingen.
